Shades of Desire 2: The Tartan MP3 Player by C.A. Szarek (Prize)

Claire gets sucked into 1672, naked and scared. Duncan rescues her only to realize she’s the key to finding his brother who was kidnapped by the Fae. Can they work together and both get what they want? Will sudden passion for each other change their goals?

Excerpt

“I’m going with you.”
A week had past and neither of them was closer to what they wanted.
Home for Claire and Alex for Duncan.
She still couldn’t remember anything before ‘waking up’ on the beach of Skye. Or how she’d got to his time. Even though he was convinced she’d travelled through the Faery Stones.
And Duncan was supposed to leave in the morning to continue his quest for them.
He laughed long and hard. “A lass on a pirate ship. Sorry, but it’s not a pleasure cruise. I’ve told ye what I seek. We’ll figure out another way ye can help.”
“Right.” Claire took a deep breath. “Your purpose is my purpose. You want to find your brother, and I want to get home.”
But did she?
Claire was already fond of this huge Highlander.
More than fond?
Her heart stuttered, but she ignored it. Duncan had been nothing but kind and honorable with her, even if his whole clan—his whole family—assumed she was sleeping with him.
Sleeping yes—as in his bed.
Every night.
Sex?
Not so much.
God, I wish.
Duncan said nothing, but he stared at her like he always did.
Claire took a step toward him, closing the distance between them in his office—ledger room—he’d called it. “We’ve talked about this. You need my help, and I want to help. Besides, maybe I can sense something, or something will jog my memory. And I can figure out how I got to that beach. It’s worth a shot.”
His massive chest rose and fell as he let out an audible breath.
Claire was holding hers.
Duncan was her familiar in this very foreign land of the past since she’d been here. She couldn’t imagine being left in the castle while he was gone for possibly months.
She adored his sister, liked his father all right, and of course little Angus, but… the thought of Duncan leaving her churned her stomach.
Historical romance novels hadn’t covered just how difficult life in this time was. Hard work, and boring with no TV, movies, not even her damn MP3 player. What was worse, she couldn’t read or speak Gaelic or Latin, so the books here were out, too.
No automation. Everything was manual labor, even cooking and laundry. Being a guest, she wasn’t expected to help Janet and the female staff with the castle day-to-day, but she didn’t want to sit around and be useless.
So Claire had been scrubbing floors on all fours, using a washboard to clean clothing and bed linens. Even smacking the dust out of tapestries.
She was a decent cook, so the previous night she’d helped in the kitchens, preparing a stew the men had seemed to enjoy, but she’d drawn the line at killing, even if she’d cooked and eaten the meat.
The archaic defined roles of the sexes were irritating but not a surprise.
On the other hand, the simplicity of life here appealed. And smiles meant the same. Love was the same.
Duncan’s people were kind and had welcomed her. Not even questioned her presence at Dunvegan, or in his rooms…in his bed.
“I see yer wisdom there.” He crossed his arms. “I don’ like it. My men…are ruffians.”
His thick brogue, leaving off the t whenever he said ‘don’t’ still made her heart beat harder. The man was pure sex.
Claire took two more steps. She could feel the heat coming off his body. “You’ll protect me.” She wanted to inch even closer. If he reached for her, she could be in his arms in seconds. A tremor shot down her spine.
“Will I now?” One corner of his mouth shot up. Amusement wrapped Duncan’s words and Claire’s heartbeat kicked up another notch.
“Aye.” She winked as she said his word.
Duncan smiled, and her stomach fluttered. “How’s that?” He bent his head low.
She gasped.
His lips hovered over hers.
Please, God.
Let it happen finally.
Please kiss me.
“Because you’re going to tell them I’m yours.”
Duncan growled—honest to God growled. Then his mouth crashed down on hers.
Claire moaned and moved into his chest as well as into his kiss.
He forced his tongue into her mouth, but she had no intention of fighting him. She slanted her lips under his and kissed him back as Duncan wrapped his arms around her.
She’d not bothered with a chemise that morning, and the stupid wool of her skirt made her thighs itch as it brushed her skin.
His massive hands cupping her ass and lifting her scattered Claire’s thoughts and she whimpered into Duncan’s mouth.
He slammed his pelvis into hers and she melted, pushing right back.
God, she wanted him.
Burned for him.
Sleeping in his bed, but not in his arms just left her with blue balls, especially the two nights he’d held her instead of avoiding contact.
Was it finally going to happen?
The Highlanders in her damn books never had as much control as Duncan MacLeod.
Unless he didn’t want her—scratch that. An erection was pressing into her stomach.
Claire rocked into him, kissing him harder and squeezing her arms around his neck.
“Jesu, lass.” Duncan yanked away from her mouth, resting his forehead against hers. His hard chest pushed into her breasts as he panted. His high cheekbones were flushed with color.
“Duncan, I want you.”

Shades of Desire 2: The Right Temptation by Diane Escalera

Last thing Nico needs is a broken arm. Worse, now his pal’s kid sister wants to soothe his pain. It’s just like Kayla to play the seductive nurse. She’s always had a thing for Nico. Problem is, Kayla’s not a girl anymore. She’s one hot-blooded woman. And Nico’s body is heating up.

Latin Heat Trilogy, Story Two

Excerpt

Kayla ambled to the kitchen. She opened the refrigerator and perused it. Not bad. He had a few things she could work with. “What do you normally eat?”

“Grilled chicken, brown rice and broccoli,” he said without missing a beat.

Kayla laughed at his bland regimen. “I had a feeling.”

“Well, I try to take care of my body.”

“So I see.” Her gaze skittered over his physique. Whatever he did worked magically delicious.

“Although lately, I’ve been pigging out like a fat kid,” he said, with a disgusted look. “That’s what happens when you’re bored to death.”

She had a cure for his restlessness. The thought made her thighs go up in flames. Kayla shoved her head inside the cool refrigerator and peered into several plastic containers. “Some of this looks good.” She could’ve taken the easy way out, but she preferred to make something fresh, show off a little bit.

“It is. But I had so much of it already.” He puffed out his cheeks.

How adorable. She found everything he did entertaining. Kayla shut the fridge and, without asking, opened the cupboards. She found one with canned goods and food staples. “Hmm,” she mumbled, scanning the contents. She’d have to improvise. “You like omelets?”
Nico’s face lit up. “I love me some eggs.”

“Cool. I’ll whip up some veggie omelets.”

“You don’t have to cook for me, you know.”

She had a weakness for nursing people back to health. She had a weakness for one man named Nico.

The combination of the two pulled on her heartstrings. “I want to,” she said, setting aside her personal agenda.

“Don’t you have something better to do than hang out with an invalid? I’m not a barrel of laughs right now.”

Good time to gauge his interest. She locked eyes on him. “Why? You want me to leave?”

“It’s not that,” he said. Nico strode to the kitchen. He took one of her long curls and tugged on it. “I just don’t want you to waste your free time.”

She wanted to close her eyes, bottle his woodsy scent. Kayla palmed his solid chest. The touch sent a shocking bolt through her already-charged system. She kept her hand there, reveling in the feel of his potent masculinity. “Who says I’m wasting my time?”

Nico closed the space between them. Too bad his bulky cast kept their bodies from totally connecting. Several inches taller, he stared down at her with pure intensity. The heat level shot up so fast she thought they’d set off the smoke alarm in the kitchen. Kayla tilted her head back and shook her wild curls off her face. He helped by sliding a few fingers into her hair. Her heart practically jumped out of her chest. Kiss me. She’d waited years for this.

His body trapped her against the counter. Kayla shifted her position so she could feel the full force of his strength without the barrier of his injured arm. Oh God. He had an erection. Her hip acted alone and pressed up against it. She swore she heard him moan. Wait. That was her.

“Kayla,” he muttered, in a voice huskier than before.

Kiss me. She tried to send a telepathic message.

Shades of Desire 2: To Catch a Star by Dorothy Callahan

Hollywood’s hottest action hero finds himself rescued by the very woman whose livelihood he’s about to destroy.

Excerpt from “To Catch a Star”

Rex guzzled his drink and soon after flopped back in his chair. He reached for the napkin and wiped himself clean. “Again, thank you. Your hospitality—”
“Is what I do.” Tori watched him for a few seconds. “How long were you out to sea?”
He let out another deep breath, this one from a full stomach. “Three, four days. I lost a guy on Kaho’olawe when the storm blew in. Then the boat broke down about ten minutes later. I was trying to call the cops to report the accident.”
Her milky-white skin paled under her hat. “Dear Lord, somebody died? I’m so sorry.”
Rex could only look down. His director would be alive if it weren’t for him. He’d failed someone again. His stunt double was dead because of Rex, and now, so was the kid.
“Was it engine trouble? Dear God, if you landed on this side of the island, then you were almost swept out to sea.” Her fingers danced on her lips like she couldn’t imagine how terrified he must have felt.
He looked down, nodded. “I jumped in and swam the mile or so to shore the second that last storm died down.”
“A mile? You must be a powerful swimmer to pull that off.”
He lowered his gaze to his wadded up napkin. “Amazing what the drive to survive will do for a man. All I kept thinking about was getting to fresh water. And avoiding sharks.”
She smiled, leaned forward and patted his hand. “Statistically, you’re more likely to die from a coconut hitting your head than a shark attack, and more likely to get mugged than attacked by a shark, even if you’re swimming a mile back to shore by yourself.”
“Forgive me if I have no interest in attempting it again.”
She smiled. “Rather brave down a mugger?”
Her gentle tease made him smile. He’d had enough hand-to-hand training for his action scenes that he could take down an armed thug. His fans loved watching him enact the Russian self-defense called Krav Maga onscreen, so his scriptwriters always worked in some physical attacks, no stunt men. Ever again. “Actually, yes, any day.”
“Brave man. Give me a shark Monday through Saturday and twice on Sunday.”
He considered her in that moment. What woman would take a dangerous animal over a man? She was unlike any woman he’d known in the past ten years, and he had to study her through her mesh brim to get a bead on her. She had tan lines, but was not golden from hours under a UV lamp; no, this was from the sun. Her clothes looked practical and breathable and old, no designer label to be found. Her blonde hair sagged from her loose ponytail, and from what he could see, harbored natural streaks from sun-bleaching. Tori Jackson was as far removed from Hollywood as Rex could imagine.
And a complete breath of fresh air. Their conversation came easily and didn’t focus on name-dropping or gossip. Her dog, an old, muddy-toed Lab, looked nothing like the frou-frou designer mutts that the debutants carried in their designer shoulder bags, and as said beast nudged him, he felt a cold stab of realization: Tori Jackson was a hero, a genuine people-saving hero. She didn’t play one on the silver screen; she acted it out in real life. Humbled, he asked, “Why are you so kind to a bum like me?”
She stood and smiled and collected his empty plate. “Every living thing is deserving of kindness, even if its purpose is veiled to our eyes. I just ask that one day you forward the favor to another creature, large or small, in equal need.”

Shades of Desire 2: Enticed by Chanta Jefferson Rand (Contest)

Action star, Lucas Stone isn’t afraid of anything—except commitment. When he butts heads with photographer, Nyla Maxwell, he thinks he may have finally found his real-life leading lady. Too bad she can’t stand his guts

EXCERPT

“Hold that cab!”
Nyla turned to see Lucas Stone sprinting toward her. He looked like he was enacting a scene from his latest series, Omega, about a bounty hunter in space. A pack of screeching females dogged his heels.
She stared, open-mouth as he approached. His muscular thighs visibly flexed against his designer pants with each step he took. Within seconds, he’d reached the curb where her taxi sat.
He dove through the open door of the cab, landing in the back seat.
Her jaw dropped. “Wait a minute. You can’t—”
“Get in!” He tugged her arm, pulling her through the door. “Hurry, before they catch up.” The pack had almost reached the taxi. “Go! Go!” he shouted to the cabbie.
The driver peeled away from the curb just as Nyla wedged herself inside and slammed the door shut. “Where to?” the driver asked.
Lucas tossed his leather duffle bag to the cab’s floor. “Drop me at the ferry. I’m going to Martinique.”
Nyla scowled. “Excuse you. This is my cab.” Then she turned to the driver. “Take me downtown.”
“Oh, no,” Lucas informed her. “That’s the opposite direction of where I’m headed.”
“Sounds like a personal problem to me.”
“Listen lady, you don’t have to be such a ball buster.”
“What?”
I said you don’t have to be such—”
She formed a stop sign with her palm and thrust it in his face. Squeezing her eyes shut, she took a deep breath. The last man to give her that label walked out on her a year ago. He’d accused her of being too uptight and putting too many expectations on him. Now, this braggart was here making the same accusation, dredging up painful memories.
“Woman, what are you doing?”
Her eyes snapped open, pinning Lucas Stone with a look of annoyance. “I’m visualizing duct tape over your mouth.”
He plastered on a fake smile. “You need to give all that hostility a one-way ticket back to where it came from.”
“I’ll try being nicer if you try being smarter.”
The cab curved sharply, flinging her from her side of the backseat to Lucas’s. She collided with the action star’s solid chest. She didn’t know which was worse. Being shoved against him or practically going deaf from the cabbie’s loud horn blast.
The cabbie shouted a string of expletives that would’ve made a sailor blush. Seconds later, he resumed his breakneck speed—barreling down the left side of the road.
“Oh, my God!” Nyla yelled. “You’re on the wrong side of the road.”
Both the cabdriver and Lucas cracked up laughing. “Calm down,” Lucas told her. “They drive on the opposite side over here. Like the Brits.”
“I’m not trying to die in St Lucia,” she declared.
“What’s with the negativity, lady? You’re not gonna die. Don’t get your panties in a knot.”
She scooted back to her side of the cab, furiously searching for her seatbelt. “My luggage is lost. My camera equipment is missing. And my cab has been hijacked by a conceited jerk who thinks he’s acting out a scene from his next movie. I think I have a right to have a negative attitude. Also, seeing as how all my panties are in my lost luggage, I highly doubt they will be tied in knots—unless the person who finds them does it.”
He winked. “I meant the panties you have on.”
She cut her eyes at him. “The ones I have on are none of your business.”
“Yep. Sounds like I’m too late. They’re already in a knot.”
“Listen, I’m sure you’re a nice guy—well, not really—but we’re turning this cab around. I need to buy new clothes. So, if you don’t mind…” She didn’t finish her thought. She didn’t have to explain herself to him. She was tired of kowtowing to everyone else while her needs languished on the side. She’d be damned if she was going to do it on her vacation. “Driver, I want to go downtown!”
“Okay,” he answered.
He made a quick U-turn, this time flinging Lucas against her. Suddenly, the superstar was too close for comfort. The woodsy smell of his cologne teased her nostrils. Despite the warmth of his firm physique pressed against her, shivers of excitement puckered her skin. She huffed loudly, exasperated by her reaction to him. Lucas chuckled as he slid back to his side of the cab. Nyla shot a glare at the cabbie.
“You said you wanted to go downtown,” the cabbie replied. “I had to make the turn before the last exit.”
She could have sworn she saw a slight smile creep across his lips.
Lucas pulled a crisp one hundred dollar bill from his eel-skin wallet and thrust the money toward the driver. “I’ll give you a hundred bucks if you turn around and head for the ferry.”
“Okay.”
“Hey!” Nyla shot toward the edge of her seat. “What about me? I need to get downtown.”
“Can you beat one hundred dollars?” the cab driver asked.
No, she couldn’t. Even if she could, Lucas would no doubt pull ten times that amount from his wallet.

Shades of Desire 2: Light My Fire by Kristina Knight

“Don’t.” Her words were a whisper, but still loud in the back of the limo.
            “Don’t, what?”
Finally she looked at him, her deep brown eyes molten in the darkness. “Don’t be my brother’s best friend tonight. Don’t be my cheerleader. Just…” Her hand trembled against his on the cool leather seat. “I’m not America’s favorite sixteen-year-old any longer. I don’t need to pretend I’m still sixteen, and the magazines are already burning me at Trey’s sacrificial altar, so why not send that old image up in flames all the way?”
She leaned across the seat, brushed her sweet lips across his cheek, and Nate nearly lost it. He was holding on by a thread. This was Lily.
The same girl he’d grown up with. The Lily who’d brought him home after school because she noticed he hadn’t eaten lunch for three days. The Lily who cheered for him at the high school talent show. The Lily who couldn’t really want him, because if she did…he would ruin her.
Nate groaned when her lips brushed against his. A bit of her hair had come loose from the sleek updo and brushed against his neck, fanning that trickle of flame even hotter.
Her hand traced the line of his jaw, and Nate’s resistance burned to the ground. He pushed her back into the corner and dug his hands into her hair. “You don’t know what you’re asking for.”
She panted. “I know exactly what I want, Nate Lansford, and what I want is you.”
Nate lowered his lips to hers, tasting the sweetness of her lips for the first time. Her tongue tangled with his, pushing him further, asking him for more. And Nate gave it.
When Lily arched her back, Nate reached for her breast, feeling her nipple pucker beneath the fine silk of her dress. She moaned, a tiny sound, but it was enough to pull him back into the present.
What was he doing? This was Lily. The girl who made him want to be more than the kid from the wrong side of Malibu’s tracks. His friend.
            He couldn’t mess that up.
Nate pushed away from her, fisting his hands in his hair as he tried to put a few more inches between them. The back of the limo was too tight. He was too close to Lily. He needed air. Space.
            Distance.
“I’m sorry.” His voice was rough. “That shouldn’t have happened.”
